    Note from the President
    Board Business

Next Board Meeting - August 5 at 7PM at the Princeton Boathouse

Board meetings are open to all Lakers who wish to attend and listen. It's a good opportunity to learn more about how the club is run, and how we plan future initiatives. Member comments are always welcome.

    Captain's Report

As a reminder, all our rowing members are expected to cox practices on occasion. For those who recently did Learn to Row, now is a good opportunity to try coxing with good weather and light conditions in the morning.

To ensure everyone shares the responsibility of coxing, Coach Saasha uses a "cox number" system. This number, which you'll see on the lineup email the night before, reflects your coxing history. Here's how it works: you gain +1 point each time you row, and you get -6 points whenever you cox. Essentially, the higher your cox number, the more likely you are to be assigned as a coxswain for an upcoming practice.

    Cox Training Recap

Rain canceled the first training session. During the 2nd session 7 participants got into the coxswain seat and had experience drilling, spinning the boat twice, docking and working against challenging winds. Big thanks to our volunteers Elisabeth and Genevieve for stroking the boat and doing some supportive coaching. Also thanks to Ken Sharp who coached from the launch with Kevin Corcoran doing the driving. It was a good training session.

    Racing

The club is well into practices for the Diamond States (06/22) and Rockland (06/28) regattas, with more than 10 boats rowing in each! We also have more than 50 members signed up for our home regatta, the Carnegie Lake Regatta on July 12. Registration deadline is tonight, Wednesday, June 11, and lineups will come out soon after!

The deadline for our last sprint regatta (Quaker City) is Wednesday, July 2nd @ midnight. Sign up HERE.

Finally, if you know of any race coxswains willing to help us out this summer, or throughout the year, please reach out to Genevieve.

    Go Lakers!!

2nd Annual Capital City Rowing League

    Saturday, June 21st at 11AM

Come support the 2nd Annual Capital City Rowing League. The event is supported by PNRA, Stem to Stern and BOYD Youth Development.

Elementary and middle schoolers from several local schools put in the work for the 2024 event (row2k article). Last year a few Lakers attended and supported Joshua Rafferty who was a guest speaker for the competing athletes. It was a fun and inspiring event. Check out a sneak peek of the schools here in this video.

If anyone would like to come to speak with the athletes about rowing, your experience and how it impacts your lives and health. Please let Leslie know.

You may have already seen an email from Tom Heebink to sign up for "2025 Carnegie Lake Regatta." Sign up here

Our regatta has become one of the most popular summer club regattas on the east coast. It wouldn't be possible without all our amazing Laker and extended volunteers. We hope you sign up for one or more slots. Those of you who are racing will not know your race schedule until closer to the date. You can still sign up now and update it later if necessary.

    Captain's Report

    Some reminders:

    • We're training Tue, Wed, Fri 5:30AM and Sun 4pm this winter.  Signup for indoor training at clra.com/events.  If you miss sign-ups, add a $6 donation for each session at clra.com/donate
    • It's best to pay your Laker account monthly, maybe with your normal bill paying cycle.  Less transactions reduces our credit card charges.  A bank debit card also has lower fees.  I will send reminders when needed.
    • Our Princeton boathouse hosts have asked us not to park in the boathouse parking lot. There are exceptions including coaches and coxswains. Look here for suggested parking: clra.com/parking
    • 2023 LTR members need to renew as 2024 members to sign up for events starting 2/1/2024. Transitioning from LTR status is a manual process. Please reply to this email and I'll help get it done.  See clra.com/membership for membership levels and fees.

Back on the water starts Sun 3/17/2024 including a back on the water party in the boathouse. It's coming up fast in 7 weeks! The Lakers will continue to train indoors too year around.

    LTR

Our 2023 Learn to Row class is starting off the year with a strong turnout for erg practices! We encourage all new rowers interested in or curious about racing at CLRA to reach out to Race Captains Genevieve Looby, Elisabeth Hauptman, or Daren O'Sullivan. Racing isn’t just for expert rowers!

LTR T-shirts and certificates are still available for anyone who would still like them. Contact Laura ONeill by email to arrange pick up.

Thank you to all who participated in the survey (link below for those who have not yet completed it). Getting feedback is an important way to address what needs improvement and what is working well.

    LTR Survey

Just a reminder for anyone interested in our mentor program to contact a member of the Learn to Row Committee, or if you’re planning to race, Genevieve Looby, who will also be working with us to match Mentors and Mentees.

    Volunteers

Lakers we are looking to understand where you will be able volunteer and help out this year.  We are a community-driven organization, and your support helps us thrive. Please fill out this survey by February 29th to let us know where you'd like to contribute.

The online team store for ordering CLRA training gear is now open and will only be open until midnight March 31 st . These are cold weather items from the company that makes our racing gear, and the prices listed require a minimum order for each type of item. A team store for racing uniforms will open later this spring and some of these items will not be in that.

At the JL Team Store site, you can use your own credit card to order CLRA logo items as well as training gear. Everyone MUST get their order in by end of day on March 31 st . Orders are set to ship in bulk to the team coordinator who will arrange to get your order to you, but the site asks you to input a shipping address with your order. The shipping rate on each order is your portion of the bulk shipping rate based on the size of your order.

If you miss the store closing date, you may order these items as an individual, directly from JL. For late orders, pricing and shipping will be different than a team purchase.

There is information on the site to help you place your order, including a size guide for the garments JL Racing Sizing Guide and rolling your cursor over some items. Vest sizes can be ordered 1 or 2 inches shorter or longer, but they are shorter in front by design for rowing. If you have further questions about garment sizing, please contact customerservice@jlracing.com.
