Head of the Charles Regatta RESULTS

52nd Head of the Charles
Twenty-eight Lakers competed in Boston at the Head of the Charles Regatta on October 22-23.  The weather was erratic with high winds and heavy deluges of rain making for exciting and challenging race conditions. Gwyn Linus described it well when she reported, “We slid our way past at least two crashes and endured the hardest rain I've seen in my 20+ years coxing (and I once raced in a hurricane in DC).”  Luanne Suplick told how it rained so hard rowing to the start that they used sponges and rags to bail.
CLRA fielded eight boats, one each in the following categories in the order of events on Saturday:
9.  Women’s Senior Masters Fours (Rose Ford, Sandra Fischer, Zoe Brooks, Nancy Paquette, cox Elisabeth Zimmer)
11. Women’s Senior Masters Doubles, Grand Master Division (Karen Ellis and Loretta McCarthy)
11.  Women’s Senior Masters Doubles, Veteran Division (Barbara Hogan, composite with Sara Sargent)
12.  Men’s Senior Masters Singles (Hans Halvorson)
16.  Men’s Club Fours (Matt Pye, Ivan Prokofiev, Miles Hopgood, Ed Wengryn, cox Margery Mark)
17.  Women’s Club Fours (Allison Muller, Katie Samsel, Alison Pollini, Susanne Hackenbeck, cox Gwyn Linus)
23.  Women’s Masters Fours (Luanne Suplick, Susan Weinstein, Jeanne Perantoni, Joni Dabb, cox Genevieve Carillo)
Director’s Challenge, Parent/Child Doubles (Bill Flynn, Joe Flynn)
·      Hans Halvorson had a stand-out performance again this year in his single event. He won the 3rd place medal in a very tough field of 31. In fact, Hans’ time of 19:14.6 was the fastest of all Laker entries!
·      Special congratulations also go to Rose, Sandra, Zoe, Nancy and Elisabeth for earning CLRA a guaranteed entry in the Women’s Senior Masters Fours at HOCR 2017.
·      Barbara and Sara will also be rowing in the 53rd HOCR next year. They had the fastest time among the Veteran women in the 2x and were awarded the Special Medal.
·      An additional two Lakers took part competing with their other clubs. They were Jan Stone who won her fourth first place medal in the Women’s Senior Veteran II Single and Nora Schultz whose boat finished fourth (winning a subsidiary medal) in the Women’s Senior Masters Fours.
Congratulations Lakers!!  Without exception, our crews merit high honors for putting it all on the line in competition with the best of the best in our sport.
